The story

Portrait of Nomsa Dube in the bush at sunset

I joined the field ranger team in the Timbavati at twenty-three and spent twelve years on foot in the bush — counting, patrolling, following the same elephant herd through dry years and wet ones. Guiding was never the plan. Then a friend asked me to take her parents out for a morning, and I realised I liked showing people how to listen more than I liked walking alone. Bush Season is the route I would want to be taken on: slow, on foot where it matters, with time to sit still. I know the animals here by their habits, and a few by name.

How they travel

We walk early, rest in the heat and go out again when the light softens. I would rather spend an hour with one herd than drive past ten. Everyone learns to read a track by day three.

Their journey

One route, written and led by them

Every VELD author leads a single journey — the one they know best — on every departure.
