Cape Peninsula
Fynbos, the Cape coast and cold water
“The Cape has nine thousand plants. I’ll introduce you to forty.”
Botanist and year-round sea swimmer. Knows which fynbos flowers in which fortnight.

The story

I trained as a botanist and spent ten years surveying fynbos on the Peninsula — nine thousand plant species in an area the size of a city. I still cannot walk past a protea without stopping. The sea came later: a friend took me swimming at Clifton in July and I have not missed a winter since. Fynbos & the Atlantic is my week: mountain in the morning, water in the afternoon, a table in the evening. It is gentle on purpose. The Cape does not need to be rushed.
How they travel
I like to teach forty plants, not nine thousand, and to swim every day it is possible. The pace is easy. We eat where I eat.
